Calculator limits
Results are arithmetic on the numbers you enter, not trading advice. Brokers may use different contract sizes (especially for exotic pairs and CFDs), round lot sizes differently and convert profits at their own rates. Leveraged forex and CFD trading carries a high risk of losing money quickly; most retail CFD accounts lose money. Check your broker's contract specification before you trade.
How forex profit and loss is calculated
P/L (quote currency) = (Entry − Exit) × Units for a short
The result is in the quote currency and is then converted into your account currency. Counting it in pips gives the same answer: P/L = pips moved × pip value.
Long EUR/USD
Buy 0.5 lots (50,000 EUR) at 1.0850, sell at 1.0900. Move = +0.0050 = +50 pips. P/L = 0.0050 × 50,000 = +$250.
Short USD/JPY, USD account
Sell 1 lot at 150.00, buy back at 149.00. Move = +100 pips in your favour. P/L = 1.00 × 100,000 = ¥100,000, converted at the exit price: ¥100,000 ÷ 149.00 = +$671.14.
Costs the calculator leaves out
- Spread: you buy at the ask and sell at the bid, so a new position starts slightly negative.
- Commission: charged per lot on many raw-spread accounts.
- Swap / rollover: credited or debited for positions held past the daily rollover time.
